Anaesthesia for the child with a univentricular heart: a practical approach

Congenital heart disease (CHD) represents a major challenge for anaesthetists. This is due to the complexities in pathophysiology and impact of surgery anaesthesia, which predisposes significant perioperative morbidity mortality.1 Univentricular (UH) consists large variety rare complex congenital cardiac malformations. There are cases children having only single functional ventricle from birth. More commonly, may receive surgical palliation defects by creating univentricular when biventricular repair not feasible. About 30% patients with physiology have complications undergoing non-cardiac surgery.2 During this review, we aim provide practical understanding UH outline systematic approach management these presenting surgery. We conclude an evaluation use near-infrared spectroscopy, transoesophageal echocardiography ventricular assist devices, as technologies increasing application challenging patient population.
